As the deer inched closer, I noticed that
he was missing several patches of fur. The deer’s exposed skull glistened wetly,
and one of his antlers was gone. The other antler held something that resembled
a flap of human skin. My body trembled as he raised his black eyes to meet mine. It
was the first time I’d ever seen an infected animal.
