Weekend Review: The Final Girls

I love horror movies, but I was hesitant about picking up this horror comedy. I have only enjoyed a few horror comedies, like Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, but I am glad that I picked up The Final Girls. The Final Girls is about Max, who loses her mother and gets somehow sucked into the horror film that her mother is best known for. I love how the movie mixed modern horror with 70's and 80's horror. Parts of it reminded me of Friday the 13th. The horror film characters were all stereotypical, which added to the fun of watching the movie. The killer even had a backstory: he took too long in the bathroom so some mean kids set him on fire. I really enjoyed the Final Girls, but it was not without flaws. I kind of felt like something had been cut out of the movie, but I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was. The movie was still great, and I would suggest it to anyone looking for a light horror comedy.

Tv adaptions that don't follow the book

This morning I turned on the tv to find that the season premiere of Bitten was on. I've talked about Bitten before, and I honestly do not like the series. I did watch a little of it, since I had read the second book and wondered if the second season would follow that story line. It didn't appear to, and that got me thinking about tv and movie adaptions that don't follow the story line that unfolds in the book. I don't really mind if the story in the book and the story that unfold on tv or a movie are the same as long as they don't change it up too much. I still want to know that what I'm watching is something from the same vein as what had been written. I want it to be similar enough to know that what I'm watching was inspired by the book or graphic novel of the same name. I think if it was my work being adapted I would enjoy seeing where others went with my work. There wouldn't be much point to watching a tv show or movie if you already knew what was going to happen, but there has to be a balance. It still has to resemble the original work enough for the fans, but be different enough to keep people interested.

Let The Right One In

For those of you who don't know, Let The Right One In is a Swedish film and the basis for Let Me In. I watch a lot of foreign horror movies. I've seen all the ones that got American remakes (all the Asian ones anyway), and after reading about this one I had to see it. I'm sorry to say that I did not care for it. I was told it was a must watch vampire movie, but for me it was an avoid at all costs snooze fest. The story is slow, and even the violent parts drag on. It's the story of a little vampire girl befriending a regular boy. A boy who is bullied. You've probably figured out where this is going, but if you haven't, she kills the bullies. I never finished watching the movie. I just couldn't get into it. I knew her guardian was actually a boy she befriended who grew into a man. I don't know much other than what I've written. The American remake is on now and it looks much better. I might actually have to watch it. The movie does raise some questions for me, like if I was a young vampire how would it feel to make these friends who grow up and die? How would I feel if I was the bullied kid who befriended the vampire? Would I care that she killed the bullies? I'm sure I'd feel a lot of guilt. What would it be like to live a life where you can never grow up, fall in love, or support yourself?
