Building characters that work

Recently I was scrolling through facebook, as I usually do, and reading a few articles. One that caught my eye was about a man who had been married for such a short time that he hadn't gotten to see his wedding photos. I read most of the articles, wondering why the pair had broken up after such a short time, but not finding any answers. I commented, "Why did they get divorced?" in the comments section, but no one knew. I found myself wondering why I cared about a stranger getting divorced, and then I realized that a good storyteller can make you care about the people they write about, even if they aren't real or aren't a part of your life. It's always been a dream of mine to be a storyteller. I want people who read my writing to care about the characters and what happens to them. I want them to be on the edge of their seat when the character is in danger. I want people to stay up until one in the morning to finish my book, just like I do for my favorite authors. I know it's a hard path, but it's what I want to do. I want to write a book that makes people feel emotion.
